Saxenda Injection
Saxenda is an injectable medication used for weight management in adults and adolescents. It contains liraglutide, which is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Liraglutide works by regulating appetite and caloric intake, leading to weight loss.
Composition:
- Liraglutide: The active ingredient that mimics the GLP-1 hormone, helping to regulate appetite and food intake.
Key Uses:
- Weight Management: Saxenda is used for chronic weight management in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or greater (obesity) or 27 kg/m² or greater (overweight) with at least one weight-related condition such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia. It is also approved for use in adolescents aged 12-17 years with a BMI corresponding to ≥30 kg/m² for adults and a body weight above 60 kg.
Administration and Dosage:
- Subcutaneous Injection: Administered once daily by subcutaneous injection in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.
- Dosage: The starting dose is 0.6 mg per day for one week. The dose is then increased weekly in increments of 0.6 mg until the maintenance dose of 3.0 mg per day is reached. If the patient cannot tolerate the maintenance dose, discontinuation of treatment is recommended.
Important Considerations:
- Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Serious side effects can include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney problems, and allergic reactions.
- Monitoring: Regular follow-up with a healthcare provider is recommended to monitor weight loss, blood sugar levels, and overall health. Kidney function should also be monitored periodically.
- Contraindications: Not suitable for patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Not recommended for patients with a history of severe hypersensitivity to liraglutide or any of the product components.
- Drug Interactions: Saxenda can interact with other medications, including insulin and other antidiabetic drugs. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Saxenda should not be used during pregnancy. The safety of Saxenda during breastfeeding has not been established. Women of reproductive potential should use effective contraception during treatment.
- Diet and Lifestyle: Saxenda should be used as part of a comprehensive weight management program that includes a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
- Prescription Only: Available by prescription only and should be used under the supervision of a healthcare provider.
