What Is Ibandronic Acid?

Ibandronic acid (also called ibandronate) belongs to a class of drugs known as bisphosphonates. It works by inhibiting osteoclast activity — the cells responsible for breaking down bone. By slowing bone resorption and turnover, ibandronic acid helps preserve bone mineral density, which can decrease the likelihood of fractures in individuals with osteoporosis.

The 150 mg strength is typically prescribed as a once-monthly oral tablet. This dosing regimen has the advantage of convenience and can help improve long-term adherence compared with more frequent dosing.

Mechanism of Action

Ibandronic acid selectively binds to hydroxyapatite, a key mineral component of bone, and is taken up at sites of active bone remodeling. Dosage & Administration

• Standard dose: One 150 mg tablet once a month

• Do not eat, drink (except water), or take other medications for at least 60 minutes after the dose.

• Remain upright (sitting or standing) for at least 60 minutes after taking the tablet to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation.

• Do not lie down, chew, or crush the tablet.

If a dose is missed, take it the morning after you remember unless it is within 7 days of the next scheduled dose; then skip the missed dose and continue monthly dosing as usual.
